Bittersweet Binky

I am not a fan of the binky. Colton never took one, so I'm new at all this, but I thought binkies were supposed to be a big relief to mothers! Kylie likes them but it's been nothing but a headache to me. She sleeps through the night in the sense that she doesn't need to eat, but she'll wake up an average of two times because she can't find her binky. And she takes awhile to get to sleep for naps because she plays around with her binky first before falling asleep and then either can't find it or can't figure out how to put it back in her mouth. When do babies finally get it and it becomes an aid for parents instead of a pain in the butt? I'm tempted just to take it away now and make her figure out how to sooth herself. Or am I close to a turning point where she'll be figuring it all out herself? I don't know what to do. But I do know that my next kid will not ever have one!!

Ugh I hear you... I have a love-hate relationship with them, too. I've heard that most babies can get them to their own mouths around 7-9 months. At night, it can help to scatter like 6-8 of them around the crib to increase the chances of them finding them on their own.

You can pick what you want to do, because Kylie is getting close to the age where she will be able to use it on her own. It's easier to take away than the thumb. I personally took it away from both of my kids when we did CIO around 3-4 months, and they both found their thumbs within about 24 hours. So much easier at night when they are little. Kota was waking every 45 minutes for a paci re-insert. It was driving me crazy. But I know they work for a lot of people, so if you stick it out, it may be a lot easier pretty soon!

I know that it's a love/hate relationship.
Here's my take on it.
Better a binky, than my breast.
Many "infants" need to suck to soothe themselves. So once my baby had eaten, and I knew he/she wasn't hungry, then I'd pop in a binky to soothe them.
Also, when it comes to the time for the binky to go, you can have the binky fairy come and take it away. Can't "take away" a thumb.
I like your friend's rec of throwing a whole bunch of binkies in the crib to up the possibilities of the child finding a binky when they "lose" one. We always have our baby's binky attached to a tether thingy, so they would be able to find the binky easier.

Have you seen these? It's a binki with a little stuffed animial attached to it. So it's much easier for them to git it in their own mouths and for you to find it in the night when it's dark without turning on the light. I think they sell them at babies r us. good luck!
